Sophie Smit and early Beukes history on Arieskraal

Thos Prins, whose Mother was born Beukes, has several pages of history typed out, written by his Aunt Sophie Smit nee Beukes. If one visits the graveyard on Arieskraal, not far from the Huisrivier, to the left and beyond the workshop and sheds, you will see that the surname Beukes is prominent.

The three at the back left are relevant to Sophie's story. Her Mother and a stillborn child are buried in the left hand one, her Father next, then her Stepmother.

An interesting story came of this, I was at a party at Compagnes Drift in Bot River and mentioned the part where the boys brought grain over from Arieskraal to Bot River, not to the Mill on Compagnes Drift which I have restored, but to another on Keerweer, now called Wildekrans. Catherine Anderson nee Buchanan (whose father Doug was long-time Manager on Arieskraal) overheard the conversation and asked why they had done this when there was a Mill on Arieskraal. I was immediately interested and was subsequently shown the ruin of what is without doubt a Water Mill just below the graveyard itself!

This picture is looking down into the pit where the large water wheel would have been, the hole in the wall on the right is where the axle tree would have passed through. It is possible to work out the diameter of the wheel by the distance from this hole to the top of the support pillars for the launder. There are at least two of these stone-built supports and the remains of the mill-pond can be found up-stream. I think the ruin is on the section of the farm now called Longshadows.
